Until you’ve had a few dozen examples of what Mizunara is supposed to taste like and how the twisted, gnarled, difficult-to-cooper, and extremely-expensive Japanese oak can influence a whiskey, you don’t really know what you’re paying for, let alone if you think it’s worth doing so!!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat’s why I loaded up on the new Glendalough 7 Year Old Mizunara Irish Single Malt Whiskey. I believe this is 100% Cooley-distilled, but in all seriousness the whiskey isn’t the point here. The Irish whiskey is merely a blank canvas upon which the Mizunara oak is displayed. If you want a first-hand lesson in exactly what makes Mizunara oak so coveted and so interesting, this my friends is the whiskey for you. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe price of a new Japanese Mizunara oak barrel is more than $3300 a piece, so they’re not cheap. But is it worth using? Only you can answer that question and you’re about to find out for yourself. I can safely say that I’ve never tasted a whiskey this saturated with the essence of Mizunara in my career. Matured for 4 months in Mizunara (70% of the barrels brand new), this whiskey is dripping with incense. It’s all sandalwood and exotic spices from front to back, with a lovely richness and fruit character from the malt across the middle. \u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-style=\"font-weight: 400;\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI backed up the truck for this deal because I consider it a benchmark experience. It’s a whiskey that’s not only delicious, it’s also a stepping stone to a greater understanding of experience. Earlier this year in January, we were excited to get another opportunity. A big part of the draw with store picks is the proof of the barrel. At cask strength, samples vary in heat and flavor. We get excited about Rittenhouse because it's bottled-in-bond — even the store picks. The Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 requires the whiskey to be a product of a single distilling season, aged in a federally bonded warehouse for a minimum of four years, and bottled at exactly 100 proof.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"\u003eHere's where we had our fun. From floor four of Rickhouse L, our Mission Barrel #8350035 was originally put into barrel in March of 2019, selected in January of 2026, and bottled this spring. Dare we say it — we're talking Rittenhouse aged just about seven years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"\u003eBottled at 100 proof just like the standard Rittenhouse, but this one has its own character. We didn't have a huge selection of barrels to choose from — but then again, there's no such thing as a bad bottle of Rittenhouse. The standard expression is pretty much the perfect rye for cocktails, even if it's not the world's most exciting sipper.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\"\u003eOur job was to find the perfect version of Rittenhouse for sipping — something that offers a deviation from their regular formula. This cask was the obvious pick. There's more vanilla and less rye spice here. It's creamy front to back with a lift of baking spices following shortly after. The peppery and herbaceous character of rye takes a back seat, with vanilla and brown sugar playing front and center while the oak shines through on the finish. The difference in that quality was clear from the moment we tasted our latest barrel selection. \u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eBottled at 113.2 proof (56.6% ABV), the heat on this potent rye whiskey almost entirely masks what’s lying underneath. Sampled without water, it’s like a blunt punch in the mouth.
